September Challenge #1/30

Dunes III

With the end of summer came an invitation to join another challenge - 30 paintings in 30 days. Not ready to put away my summer toys, I decided to revisit beaches I've been painting - in Rhode Island, neighboring Southcoast Massachusetts and Cape Cod, and DownEast waterfronts in Maine.

Labor Day weekend we sailed over to Westport Harbor, went ashore and explored the poison-ivied trail to the barrier beach. Where the two branches of the Westport River converge the scene is breathtaking - expansive and marshy and home port for the local fishing fleet. Popular with generations of painters, I will show some of my own oil sketches. Once I agreed (with myself) to join this challenge offered by my long-distance painting colleague, Leslie Saeta, I decided to paint all of the beaches I can possibly gain access to in the next 30 days.  Already stymied with days of heavy downpours this first week of September,  I'll be relying sometimes on photos and oil paintings I've been gathering for reference all summer. Dunes III is the latest in a series I began early in the summer. I love to see what emerges at a beach from fog and other inclement weather.

  1. What a wonderful challenge you have given yourself. I only hope to see someday all the places you'll be painting. Always love your coastal scenes.
